An issue that I would like to depict within my project is that of the black man stereotype commonly portrayed in media as felons, criminals, and thieves. This misconception highly influences our culture and is representative of the racial injustices occurring in the modern world. I would like to challenge this ideology by bringing forward the real human emotion of black men in America and the fear elicited by police brutality. Often times the real danger lies in the hands of those we claim to believe are the heroes of the story, the men in blue whose job is to 'save us.' Media portrayal is a key factor in creating the social dynamics within our own society. If black men are consistently portrayed as criminals, the amount of racial tensions grows. If police are consistently depicted as saviors, the misconceptions of police brutality grows.  Often times media sugar coats the issues of race in America, as children we are forced to believe that everyone is treated equally in this world, but the sad fact of the matter is that this simply is not the case.
The genre that my project is going to be is horror/thriller. More often than not, within this genre the stories are make believe and create dramatizations of the modern world. By implementing the fear and horror elicited by police brutality it challenges the stigma that all black men are 'this' or 'that.' It also breaks the ideas of a conventional horror film of fantasy and monsters. But the real question is, are there monsters living amongst us? Are the real monsters the people we have come to idolize as the men in blue who risk their lives every day, when in actuality black men in America risk their lives every day by simply existing as the color of their skin is now equitable to 'target'.
As more unarmed young black men are consistently killed by police officers the media portrayal of black men insinuating crime is detrimental to society as the stereotype leads to the deaths of innocent lives. The misconceptions and racist values upheld and implemented into the media is a killing force. By bringing forth and challenging racism in America through the depiction of a horror film, people can come to realize that the real fears lay within our own societies. The real fear is felt by people of color all over the world, as their lives have become one of terror and anxiety. The way race in media is portrayed and spoon fed from a young age is creating a racist illusion within our own societies and I believe that it is time to challenge these creations by creating a project that is capable of biting back. Through this project I hope to convey the feelings of anxiety and fear that people of color face every day in America. By bringing forth an issue is the first step in generating change.
