Here is my CCR! I hope you enjoy! I have had such an amazing time during this process. https://youtu.be/yuqjf9BztVA
Here it is the final product! 2060! https://youtu.be/JnPLY28rfos https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vURtKxeYPnNOz4VP5n6gR2YNqb_p1wkr/view?usp=sharing
Hello my name is Natalia Munoz and here I am at the end of my production. It wasn’t an easy road, but I have successfully created my film opening for 2060. That’s right I’ve finally come up with a finalized title! It’s about time am I right? This process wasn’t easy and I am grateful that I have gotten to the finale. As I have recounted throughout this process with updates on my blog, 2060 is about a dystopian race war that takes place in the future year of 2060. It follows the stories of 3 young girls from different backgrounds and ethnicities on the run from one of their enemies. It didn’t initially start this way though. I had the idea to create a horror based movie, but as time went by this evolved into creating a dystopian film. I had taken inspiration from the film Get Out as I wanted to find a way to incorporate race into the horror genre much like how Jordan Peele managed to capture his vision on screen. I wanted to bring the fears people of color face on the daily to life by d
I think I have successfully conjured up my vision for what I want this film to look like on screen. I think filming the scenes and having visual representations has given me an idea of how I want to string all of the footage together. I know I want the brainwashing scene to be strewn in between all of the forest clips as it would act as a cross cutting technique that would imply that both scenes were happening at the same time. I did not capture any dialogue during the entirety of my filming process and that is because of the fact that I wish to do a voice over of different "news reportings." While filming I realized that the brainwashing itself was not necessarily clear enough. That is why my first voice over will be said with a voice alterer that will deepen and slow down my voice and implement key phrases over and over again in order to show that this is in fact conditioning the people to think alike in racist mindsets. I want these strewn throughout to show the signi
Filming has been completed! These next two posts will recount the process and how everything ended up playing out. So I managed to lose two of my potential characters for my dream cast. I was down one on either side of my proposed "race war" dystopia. This initially scared me and left me having to work around my story board and create on the spot alternative plans. I decided to take a different approach to my film and focus on formalist elements rather than realism. I felt that this would more accurately capture the general "feeling" of the opening, by using color schemes in the mis-en-scene and creating a visual contrast between the antagonists and the protagonists. The filming process did not take as much "work" as I had expected, but technical difficulties surely did make the process last longer than expected! I filmed over the course of two days, which was not expected, initially I was only supposed to allocate the Wednesday for my film, but due
Updates! I got my cast finalized for Wednesday and I have left Thursday open as well in case of possible issues that may arise and re filming that may need to be completed the following day. I am worried that my scenes may possibly look differently from day to day as possible weather differences can play a factor as well as characters overall appearance. I am hoping that all goes to plan in terms of my characters being able to make this day dedicated to filming and having people available to re film on that Thursday for precautionary measures. I will be providing transportation to everyone involved in my film and the majority of my day will be spent arriving to the location planning out my angles and movements as well as writing them down in an orderly fashion and trying my best to stick the original storyboard I had planned earlier on during this process. As I started typing this I have just realized that I do not have a name for my film! All this time planning and processing and I
Audio, audio, audio! I had no idea how hard this could possibly be, but here I am, definitely struggling with how to properly execute my vision. I realized I am extremely limited on resources in terms of both camera and audio technology. This brings me to make a creative executive decision to ensure that my final product is up to the quality of which I would like it to reach. With all of this being said, I came to the conclusion that limited dialogue would work best for my film opening. I want the majority of the feelings for the film opening to be displayed through human emotion rather than audible speaking parts. Not only will this make it easier for me to execute my film opening with as little issues as possible, but will also add to the emotive quality of which I want my film opening to possess. I can’t just say scratch audio completely as this clearly isn’t A Quiet Place. Therefore I am going to use the tactic of voice over. Through voice over I can provide background and storyli

I may have just discovered a new filming location! While starring in a friends opening film, his filming location did catch my eye. It’s an empty school parking lot, but behind it there is lots of greenery in which could also act as my character’s “hiding place.” My storyboard is far from being finalized and I have a great feeling that it will be created as soon as I step foot onto both my finalized location as well as any extra locations that are needed to create my finalized film opening. I want to make sure that I capture the fact that these girls are on a “journey” for their safety. In order to do so I felt as though it was necessary to not only follow them through the forest, but also in empty lots or empty buildings/stairwells. I want their journey to be captured on screen by showing just how far these girls have to travel in order to find safety from their enemy. I took inspiration from The Walking Dead as in this series the characters consistently move from one location to the
Updates! I got my projector! I have yet to figure out exactly how it will be implemented into my film, but I do know that it will most definitely be used in some capacity. I have conjured up some ideas of brainwashing. In my dystopia the mass ideology is that people of color are sub par and must be eliminated in order to create a “pure and master race.” Yes, this does sound exactly like World War II, however, this future society has fully executed this plan and only few are on the run, running for their lives in hiding. I feel as though the brainwashing idea stemmed from the same concepts that occurred during the Nazi regime. Often times in order for Hitler to spread his ideology he began teaching his propaganda from an extremely young age where children were trained to believe in the “Aryan race” and the racist/anti-Semitic mentality. This is where the projector comes in. At first I wanted to use a small television, but had realized that I had limited resources at hand and could not a

Hello! I have come back for a few more updates on my film opening production process. It seems never ending, but each step and each consideration will hopefully result in a desired end product that I can be proud of. I am consistently messing with my storyboard and I have yet to come to a desired end product as to what I want to film, which is very very STRESSFUL! I am filming on Wednesday and Thursday of next week and it seems as if the date keeps growing closer and all the more daunting. I wanted to change the way my film is introduced on my storyboard, but I have yet to commit to any set idea. This has been the most stressful part of the process. I know I have to include a news reporting within my opening to bring context to the scenario occurring on screen, but I am still uncertain as to whether or not have it be a voice over, or an extra scene with a zoom in on the situation occurring as discussed in previous blog posts.       If I am going to introduce my film with a man vi

Mise-en-scene, mise-en-scene, mis-en-scene, isn't that a mouthful? It almost sounds like a tongue twister, and it certainly can make my head fall into quite a frenzy. I have an idea on the type of color scheme I want my film to consist of, but I am uncertain as to how I can pull this off without weather interruptions or lighting issues. There is nothing bright and sunny about a race war, so the ideal outdoor environment I could possibly ask for is gloomy and overall cloudy. This being said, rain would ruin my production and would not be the ideal situation that I could be put in. I touched on this in an earlier blog posting, but ultimately I am hoping for a dull outdoor scene in order to pull together the dull colors of the rest of the film. I want my characters to be wearing dull colors as well, but I want their antagonists to be wearing brighter and noticeably cleaner apparel. This contrast should be noticeably different on screen and is meant to draw the audiences attention
Hi, me again, I have new updates about my production design and future plans to creating a consistent background design and keeping elements appearing in the film consistent with the content I am aiming at producing. The background is extremely important in establishing consistency of the dystopia as there can be no items that indicate that the film is occurring at any time in the past or rather our present. For example, I am making sure that no cellular devices are seen in my film, as well as pop culture references that would not make sense for a fictional future society. Having a Beyonce album playing or a One Direction poster on a wall would not properly align with the dystopia I am attempting in creating on screen! So this being said I want to make sure that everything is consistent in my film, but as I conducted research on how best to do this, I came across many stereotypes of the genre and I wanted to challenge these conventions. Often it is said that the future is extreme
Hello hello :) just wanted to tune in to give updates on my film opening process. I am currently super overwhelmed with the amount of work I have cut out for me! I did not realize how much work actually goes into production and pre production planning. I felt like I had everything figured out one moment and the next, things weren't so easy. From believing that a location would be all I would need and raggedy clothing, to then realizing every small thing must be accounted for in my film opening. Since I am attempting to portray a dystopian society, all external factors must be accounted from, from what appears in the background of the film, to costume design, and even to makeup and hair of the characters. I wanted to focus in on the makeup and hair design of my characters and how I would go about this minute detail that could influence the quality and believability of the future society I am trying to capture on screen.      I realized I was in luck in terms of difficulty and
Hello again! As of now I believe that my filming location is going to be Markham Park near camping grounds. I am hoping to ask for filming rights and to borrow a small shed/camping ground area to serve as the "shelter" for my 4 protagonists.  However, I have also created alternative plans if this scenario does not play out as expected. Today I spent the day scouting for other potential filming locations. I visited another park fairly close to Markham Park, called Peace Mounds Park. This location is busier than Markham and does not seem necessarily convenient, but I discovered a small location of barren forest ground. The isolation of this hidden gem can act as a perfect setting for my future film opening. I have currently scheduled to film on the 27th and 28th of this month as I and my peers will be off for the break. This seemed like the most practical time to film my opening as it would ensure that there would be minimal to no conflicts. So far my entire cast is availa
Hello I figured I'd drop by to bring some updates to the table on my film opening research process! I have recently sat with some of my classmates in order to draw feedback for my current status during this planning period. I introduced my idea of a dystopian society coated with elements of horror surrounding current social issues. My peers pitched their opinions and suggestions after introducing my concept and how I would go about executing this "vision" of which I have conjured up in my head. They appreciated the breaking of conventions by including a variety of people of color as well as breaking a common stereotype in the genre of horror which is, people of color always dying first.  They appreciated the controversy of the film and how it can be representative of real social issues affecting many in the United States as political tensions grow tense. The reality of the situation being dramatized, but also holding truth was one of the major parts of the proposed p
Production Design!!!! Ok so,  I'm really excited about creating my film, but deep down I know that this is the most time consuming part of my entire process and one that requires the most planning. Yet here I am attempting to create an entire dystopian society on little to no budget for this film opening. I am hoping that my characters can do the majority of the work when it comes to depicting the conflict and the clear difference from contemporary society and the future in which chaos is commonplace. To expand on the idea that I have previously mentioned in my last blog posting, the zooming in on a news report through a T.V and show the perspective of what is happening on screen in front of the man. This same ideology for horror movies has been presented before. Through my research on how to properly execute this with tying in plot and establishing context, I came across a horror movie by the name of Hereditary (2018) . This movie implements the same concepts of which my peer
Hello! I am back with more updates on my progression with my film opening process. I have currently come to the conclusion that creating a fake news reporting is more difficult than I once thought it would be. I did however, find an excellent source to create at the very minimum the visual of a fake news reporting. This website is going to ultimately allow me to create a format to insert my own text and use this creation on a small television or projector in front of the man watching the news at the beginning of my film opening. Now that I think about it, a projector may seem like a better and easier alternative than a smaller television. The projection should be placed in a blank room with no furniture and be surrounded by a variety of walkie talkies and radios. I am unsure still on whether or not the male staring at the news reporting should be white or a person of color. I believe him being a person of color could add to the plot as he can even be connected to one of the four
Hey guys, I'm back with a few more updates! I realized I had yet to figure out a location as well as specific dates for shooting my film opening. I knew I had to find a location that appeared to be desolate in order to fit the theme of a dystopian society. I had already figured out my casts, but I had yet to figure out when exactly I would even begin filming. I had a vague idea that I would need to film in a public space where it would be fairly easy to gain permission to film on their grounds, as any private location had the possibility of causing me trouble and tedious altering. I had decided upon filming at a location fairly close to my house, Markham Park where there is a forest trail farther into the park as well as locations where there are minimal to no people. This location seems near perfect, but also has the potential of not being my exact filming location due to the possibility of not being able to film near specific camping sites. My other option is to film near a

Me again, I have taken my outline and turned into a visual representation in order for my planning process to go as smoothly as possible! I have storyboarded what I want my film opening to look like each shot is purposeful in conveying the ultimate message of fear and the empathy that I want my audience to feel when watching this film opening. This will be evoked through the variety of close up and point of view shots that I have included, both of these inputs will allow for me to have a direct control on the emotion portrayed and how it is received by the audience. I have yet to figure out the variety of shots that I would like to place during the slow motion inputs of my scene, but I will keep you guys updated as soon as I figure out what I exactly that will consist of! For now I apologize in advance for my terrible drawing skills, but here's my storyboard!
Hello! I have finally decided to share with you guys the rough draft of the outline for my opening scene! So far I have created this outline and vision for how I want my film opening to turn out, and I know I have to continuously and meticulously edit this draft until I reach my final product, but I am so excited to share with you what I have so far! -Establishing shot of a shed/small house -Cuts to P.O.V shot of one of the people in the group of individuals running in a forest -Tracking shot of people running -Tracking shot continues and follows to the same shed seen in the establishing shot -Cuts to a long shot of shed -Long shot of people running to shed "lines up" with the tracking shot previously seen -Close up of Nicole's face covered in sweat and dirt as she sits in the shed with light shining through onto her face -Camera tilts from Nicole sitting on the ground to Amrit sitting on top of her on the shelf above her -Camera follows another point of view s
Hello, me again, just coming in to tell you on my plans for what I want my cast to look like! As you all know my main purpose is to break the stereotypes of how minorities are presented on screen, more specifically in the genre of horror. My purpose in creating this film opening is to break through conventions and bring forth a variety of people of color in order to depict the unifying fear that many minorities currently and have faced in the U.S. I did not wish to solely focus on one race or ethnicity as I felt that would be too confining for my film and would not accurately represent the fact that racial tensions in this country have expanded to many backgrounds and cultures. The group of characters that I am going to be discussing will be the protagonists of my film, this group of individuals all come from different backgrounds and ethnicities and have all found themselves in the predicament of a new found "race war" and in an apocalyptic status in the country. This d

I have realized that I have no idea where to start! From my experience in watching horror movies, the budget is typically high for the use of special effects and a proper set. Which is exactly what I am lacking! Therefore, my journey to find resources began. I decided to search the internet for inspiration on how exactly to even begin the process of filming a horror movie, let alone one that breaks from conventional standards. I watched this video on low budget films focused more specifically on apocalyptic worlds. Although my film does not center around zombies, or a robotic future, it is still dystopian nonetheless. While watching the creator of the short film, 'The Manual', he noted how he drew inspiration and how he organized a variety of elements from not only other films, but art, design and photography and implemented these aspects to create his own vision. He had created many mood boards from a variety of art to conjure up his vision for what he wanted his film to look
Long time no see, it has been quite some time from when I have last posted, but my research on my horror genre film opening piece is far from over. I have decided to research the history of what conventions the horror genre usually is composed of, and on my internet browsing journey I came across an article that discusses the film I had previously mentioned, 'Get Out'.  This film has currently inspired me significantly as it challenged the typical horror genre conventions. The implementation of race into the horror genre can accurately depict the fear experienced by minorities across the U.S in a time of high political climate. Not only did I draw inspiration from the film 'Get Out', but the history of race in horror movies is a significant factor in the influence of how we perceive and handle race in America. Within this article the ideology that was once shown on screen were typical for their time and can be deemed as racially offensive, was the depiction of white
