1. Thriller
2. The thriller genre is broad and often consists of multiple overlapping genres. Common characteristics of the thriller genre are defined by moods that the film may elicit. Often times these moods created by thriller films are heightened feelings of excitement, surprise, anticipation, and suspense. The plot of thriller films keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, as the plot in this genre gradually builds up to reach the climax/pinnacle of the film. The content of thrillers often depicts a villain-driven plot in which the main characters must overcome and face. Within this 'edge of your seat' feeling viewers experience a variety of plot twists and turns within the films which adds to the suspense thrillers are known for.
3. Common production techniques within the thriller genre are tracking and panning shots. These establish movement and can often add to the feeling of chaos and rapidity in terms of point of view of the characters. This is particularly effective in this genre as it can better convey the feelings of suspense as the camera moves along with the characters when being watched, stalked, or followed. Another useful production technique in the thriller genre are close up shots as these are necessary to properly convey emotion of the characters and elicit a specific response in the audience/viewers. This allows for sympathetic value and for the thriller genre to essentially be classified as a thriller as it creates feelings of tension and anxiety.
4. Get Out (2017)- The film Get Out is a key example of a more modern thriller. In this film a young black man is dating a white woman who invites him to meet her parents upstate. Her parents are perceived by the man as overly welcoming and he soon realizes that the family aren't simply being nice, that there lies an underlying secrecy of racist values. The main character slowly realizes that there is something deeply wrong with his girlfriend's family as the film progresses both the viewers and the main character begin to unravel the dangers of the seemingly unsuspicious household. This film embodies the genre of thriller as common themes of a slow and progressive plot, which ultimately leads to a collateral climax is present in Get Out.
Not only does this film carry a progressive and secretive plot, both characteristics of thriller films, but the rapidity of shots and close up shots help to convey the fear of the main character. This film elicits a sense of anxiety and worry in the audience as they sympathize and root for the protagonist. The villain-protagonist dynamic is used in this film as well, which adds to the connection of the audience with the characters and helps to create the feeling of suspense as viewers grow attached to the protagonist and ultimately, are on the edge of their seats in hopes that he will escape the confinement of the white household.
5. Jaws (1975)- The film Jaws is an older example of a thriller where a man eating shark is on the hunt for more victims. The film Jaws broke the ideas of the horror genre and created a clear overlap of both the fear and gore commonly seen in horror films along with the sense of anxiety and stress seen in thriller films. The main reason why Jaws embodies the thriller genre so well is the same villain-protagonist dynamic and the anxiety and fear it elicits is present in this film. The shark would be classified as the villain and the protagonist would be any human in proximity of the shark. The viewer finds themselves at locked eye with the screen depicting the sense of urgency and stress in escaping the villain (the shark).
The emotion created by the film alone shows why this film is a clear example of the thriller genre. This paired with the close ups and consistent camera movement and following the body movements of both the humans in water and the quick swimming of the shark, creates a rapid feeling of intensity. The intensity created by the camera movement adds to the common feelings of suspense and anxiety and leaves viewers once again "on the edge of their seats."
